Hello, and welcome to A Fencer's Journey!
You could say it all started twenty years ago. My brother and I pretended we were pirates, hacking away at each other with swords imagined out of sticks. As it turned out, you could play with swords professionally...in a sport called fencing.
A quick search online revealed a local fencing club in my area, but I hesitated to sign up. Let's face it, action sports dominate the world's attention. I doubted anybody still fenced anymore, who would opt for a sport steeped in rules and etiquette over sports like snowboarding (my other love)? I didn't want to be the only guy in my city fencing, but with snowboarding season over and nothing better to do, I scheduled my first fencing lesson in June 2011.
As it turns out, fencing isn't a sport for snobs. And as far as action goes, it packs an adrenaline rush bordering some of the more exhilarating action sports. In fact, it is so fun I wanted to help encourage new fencers to try it. So I created A Fencer's Journey that summer first to document my progression from unskilled skeptic to dedicated fencer, but also as a resource for fencing in general.
